At the Red Deer District Chamber, policy and advocacy are central to how we support our members. Every day, decisions made by governments impact your ability to operate, grow, and compete. That’s why we’re committed to being a strong voice for business by advocating for policies that reduce barriers, enhance competitiveness, and create a climate where enterprise can thrive. Whether it's pushing for regulatory reform, improved infrastructure, or fair taxation, we are here to represent your interests and ensure that the business perspective is not only heard but acted upon. Your success is our priority, and our advocacy work is one of the most impactful ways we help achieve it.
On May 31, 2025, delegates from Chambers across Alberta gathered in Medicine Hat for the Alberta Chambers of Commerce (ACC) Annual General Meeting. A key highlight of the event was the Policy Plenary session, where 28 new and renewed policy resolutions were adopted to guide collective advocacy at the provincial and federal levels. These policy recommendations reflect the priorities of business leaders from across the province - addressing both persistent issues such as regulatory reform and interprovincial trade, as well as emerging challenges around energy market access, Indigenous economic inclusion, and rural business resiliency.
We are proud to share that three of the adopted policies were championed by the Red Deer District Chamber:
Single Stair Building Code Reforms
Alberta’s building code currently requires multiple stairwells in residential buildings over two stories - a regulation that increases construction costs and limits design flexibility. This policy calls for the adoption of single egress stairways in residential buildings up to eight stories, supported by modern safety features.
Why it matters: This change would improve housing affordability, enable more efficient and flexible designs, and support the development of Missing Middle Housing. Backed by BILD Alberta and vetted by industry experts, this proposal reflects a shift toward smarter, safer, and more cost-effective building standards.
The Option of Private Worker Coverage
This renewed policy is not about abolishing WCB - it’s about giving Alberta employers more choice. We’re asking the Government of Alberta to maintain WCB as the minimum standard while allowing private insurance alternatives for those who seek enhanced services and tailored coverage.
Why it matters: Providing choice empowers businesses to secure the best outcomes for their workers and allows for greater innovation, responsiveness, and autonomy in workplace insurance.
Enhancing Municipal Accountability and Transparency in Alberta
This policy encourages municipalities to refocus on core responsibilities, improve transparency in budgeting and operations, and refrain from competing with private businesses.
Why it matters: When municipalities stick to their legislated mandates and create a clear, level playing field, businesses can operate with greater confidence and predictability. This policy supports economic competitiveness and strengthens public trust in local governance.
We extend our sincere thanks to the dedicated volunteer members of our Policy Committees and our Board of Directors whose expertise and thoughtful input helped shape these recommendations. Your work ensures that the voice of Red Deer and region’s business community is heard - and that our needs are clearly represented in the broader provincial conversation. Together, we’re creating a stronger, more business-friendly Alberta.
